The Gatka Federation of India was formed on 07/06/2009 at Mohali with the objective of reviving, preserving and promoting the traditional Sikh martial art Gatka as a sport. At that time, a meeting of members of Punjab Gatka Association, Gatka Ustads and Gatka sports promoters of different states was held under the chairmanship of S. Harcharan Singh Bhullar (IPS). S. Harcharan Singh Bhullar was appointed as the President of Gatka Federation of India with the unanimous consent of all the members. S. Harjit Singh Grewal was appointed as General Secretary. The main motive of the federation was to promote Gatka as a sport all over India.
Even at this time, the federation is making continuous same progress with the support of all the members of the federation and the Gatka sports promoter.
On 12.12.2015, After the re-election, S. Harcharan Singh Bhullar has been re-appointed as the President and S. Baljinder Singh Toor as the General Secretary of the Gatka Federation of India, is currently serving. Gatka Federation of India is working for the promotion of Gatka at the national level in India and it has formed State Associations in the States and Union Territories of India which are working for the Gatka sport at the state level.
It is affiliated to The World Gatka Federation (WGF), Asian Gatka Federation.
The Gatka Federation of India in collaboration with WGF and AGF has published a version of the Gatka Rules and Rule Book to organize all types of official tournaments in a systematic manner and to be followed by all to play Gatka as a competitive sport.
Six Open National Level Gatka Championships have been organized by the Gatka Federation of India till the year 2022. In addition, 7 national level Ek Onkar Gatka Cups add to the Federation's achievements. GFI has organized hundreds of Gatka competitions and dozens of training camps for players and referees across India.
Due to the efforts of the Gatka Federation of India, Gatka has been recognized as a sport in school sports and universities and colleges.
Due to the efforts of Gatka Federation of India, Gatka Khel has been included in Sports Authority of India's sports event "Khelo India Youth Games" and Gatka Federation of India is contributing its due in this event. The main objective of the Federation is to give due respect to the players, referees and Gatka coaches, to give Gatka proper recognition as a sport at national and international level, due status, development and also striving to give the sport equal respect with other sports.
